STEVE POWERS - DISTILLING DAILY STORIES INTO ART
Part of the Exterior Surface Painting Outreach, or ESPO (a clever tag name), NYC graff legend Steve Powers was recently asked to speak at the PSFK Conference NYC 2012. Self-deprecating and hopelessly romantic, the talk Powers gives is everything you hope for in a speech by one of the world’s most recognizable and prolific street artists. His work - which can be seen at his site - is full of clever visual and text-based puns, which he lays out well in this lecture. Working with enamels, the art has a certain immediacy to it, expanded upon with some of his more impulsive works that involve things like cleaning his brush on other pieces of art.
A series discussed in the video, called “Daily Metaltation,” involves 8×10 pieces of metal painted daily, and gives a fresh perspective on life as Powers takes each new day as a “blank slate to be painted.” It’s a great watch, and Powers’ overwhelmingly positive outlook on life can serve as your 15 minutes of inspiration today.
