MR. - METAMORPHOSIS: GIVE ME YOUR WINGS IN NEW YORK CITY
Japanese artist Masakatsu Iwamoto is better known simply by the name Mr., and his work takes a traditional Japanese manga style and applies it to intensely heavy topics in contemporary Japanese culture. “Metamorphosis: Give Me Your Wings” features an installation regarding the artist and his style of work transposed as the living area of a victim of the large earthquake that shook Japan in March. The focus takes a leisurely approach to the tragedy many had to deal with, converting bedrooms to entire living quarters in an attempt to regain normality. The rest of the show depicts the stress in the wake of the disaster, with acrylics and watercolors dominating the walls through characters and landscapes.
