DAMIEN HIRST AND THE RICHEST ART DEALER IN THE WORLD PART WAYS
Being brought up as the art world’s biggest ongoing divorce - likely by the same people “reporting” on Katy Perry unfollowing Russell Brand on Twitter - Damien Hirst is leaving his gallery with Larry Gagosian after a 17-year stint. Despite the obvious gossip girl draw of the story, it’s significant for many reasons. An art dealer is half the reason art is sold, and often half the reason it is sold for as much. Gagosian is the biggest art dealer of them all, and Hirst believed the world’s wealthiest artist. So despite Hirst’s tendencies toward polyamory with his gallery relationships (he works with three different galleries worldwide), he will not be represented in New York or Paris. In a world where the dealer is half the reason a piece should be valued (and often even more than that when crazy things happen to the artworks), and where gallery loyalty is valued, to witness the world’s richest living artist jumping ship is an interesting turn of events.

DAMIEN HIRST’S FLAG AT LONDON OLYMPICS CLOSING CEREMONY
London celebrated the closing of the Summer Olympic ceremonies with many a star-studded bang Sunday night, incorporating many of UK’s most famous celebrities including a much-talked-about reunion by the Spice Girls. Local art icon Damien Hirst also got in on the action with his recreation of the Union Jack in his signature spin-painting motif. Unveiled as part of the event, the piece was Hirsts largets ever, and became a talking point of the entire celebration.
